Old churches seem to be infused with serenity.
This 1832 Methodist Church sits in the tiny Niagara community of Beaverdams.
It is being restored by a group called, "The Friends of Beaverdams Church". The basement is almost done and now they are working on the windows.
I was at a fundraiser yesterday that included a presentaion of 19th century Methodist music.
I was dreading it.
All that slaying and trampling underfoot of the enemies of a very crabby Yahweh.
Yuck.
But Alleluia, those old barn burners loved a cheerful, up beat hymn.
So if you heard it, yes that was me bellowing along with the crowd:
We're marching to Zion,
Beautiful beautiful Zion
We're marching upward to Zion
The beautiful city of God!

Judging from the historical sign, it doesn't appear to be a functioning church anymore since 1890? So who owns it now or has it just been empty all these years? Or did it get brought into the United Church fold when union occurred between the Methodists, Presbyterians and Congregationalists?
ReplyDeleteI am drawn to old churches. Not sure why. But I find them interesting and mysterious.
ReplyDeleteDebra the website says it was a community Sunday School until the 70s. I do know from talking to some of the people that the building will not become a museum when it it is finished. It will be re purposed as a place for conferences, weddings etc.
